Here's what we were working with - a bare, patchy backyard with no real structure to it. Thin grass, exposed dirt along the foundation, and a patio that just kind of ended without any defined edge. Not ugly, just unfinished. The kind of space you walk past every day without really wanting to spend time in it.
The goal was straightforward. Give the space some structure, clean up the foundation line, and extend the patio so there's actually room to sit outside and enjoy it. Simple on paper, but the details matter a lot when you're dealing with irregular grading and a space that wraps around a corner of the building.
We installed a large river rock bed along the foundation with black edging to create a clean, defined border between the beds and the lawn. Hostas and a few flowering plants went in to give it some life without a lot of ongoing maintenance. River rock is a solid choice here - it handles drainage well, keeps weeds down with the right fabric underneath, and holds its look without needing much attention season to season.
The patio extension ties everything together. Adding that extra surface area right off the covered area makes the whole back of the home feel intentional. It goes from a forgotten side yard to a spot you actually want to use. That shift happens faster than most people expect - and it usually costs less than a full outdoor renovation.
Small landscaping upgrades like this one tend to have an outsized effect on how a home looks and feels. It's not about doing the most. It's about doing the right things in the right spots.
